Baltimore County Police are actively investigating an incident where an officer-fired bullets struck an armed suspect in Rosedale over the weekend. According to FOX Baltimore, the confrontation happened last night, starting with a shots-fired call at the 4900 block of Hazelwood Avenue outside the Hazelwood Inn. First, respondents were unable to find the suspect, but a later call quickly brought officers near the Charlie Brown Convenience Store, where the suspect seemingly matched the earlier report.
In efforts to apprehend, the suspect attempted to evade by "ducking through cars," as police closed in. It was then that shots were exchanged, the exact sequence of which remains unclear. An officer reported observing the suspect with a firearm, and officials confirmed the recovery of a weapon at the scene. Shell casings were also found near the Hazelwood Inn, thereby corroborating the initial report of gunfire.
The unidentified individual sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently in the hospital undergoing surgery. As per standard procedure when a shooting involves police officers, the officers who participated have been placed on administrative leave, noted Detective Shelton in a statement obtained by FOX Baltimore. This measure is reflective of a protocol designed to uphold transparency and allow for an impartial inquiry into the events that transpired.
While the Homicide unit has overtaken the investigation to rigorously piece together the events, Baltimore County Police have not disclosed additional details about the suspect or the specific officers involved. With both the circumstances preceding the initial call and the moments leading to the gunfire yet to fully unravel, the public awaits answers. "It's unclear who fired first," noted a Baltimore County Police spokesperson in a statement reported by WMAR 2 News, capturing the current ambiguity surrounding the series of incidents.
