Melwood is making a big move in Maryland, announcing an affiliation with Baltimore nonprofit Humanim that will fold roughly 300 additional employees into Melwood’s ranks. This strategic partnership brings together two major social enterprise players and is expected to boost both job opportunities and service capacity for people with disabilities across the state.
According to the Washington Business Journal, the agreement will bring Humanim’s staff and programs into the Melwood affiliation and increase Melwood’s headcount by about 300 employees. Reporter and assistant managing editor Drew Hansen framed the affiliation as a major expansion of Melwood’s Maryland presence.
Melwood’s Scale And Standing
Melwood, based in Upper Marlboro, has already been reshaping its organization to set up future growth. In a 2025 announcement, the group reported that it employs more than 1,600 people and operates in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., per Melwood’s newsroom. That multistate footprint and its mix of social enterprise businesses help explain how Melwood is positioned to incorporate additional staff and programs.
Who Humanim Is
Humanim runs a network of social enterprises and workforce initiatives centered in the Baltimore region. On its contact page, the group lists offices at the American Brewery in Baltimore and a corporate location in Columbia. Humanim describes its mission as building social impact businesses that create jobs for people who face barriers to employment, according to Humanim.
What’s Next For Maryland
In its 2025 reorganization announcement, Melwood called that shift “a significant milestone” and signaled plans to grow, innovate, and invest in services, language it used to describe its next chapter, per Melwood’s newsroom. With Humanim’s staff and programs through this new affiliation, Melwood is expected to have more capacity to expand employment and training opportunities for people with disabilities across Maryland.
