A 17-year-old defendant was back in Baltimore reception court last Friday, facing murder charges in a southeast-side shooting that left a 42-year-old man dead last March. Defense counsel asked for translators for potential witnesses and pushed for a five-day trial window in June, while prosecutors put a plea deal on the table that the defense signaled it will likely turn down. Judges and lawyers are set to regroup on Feb. 13 to hash out the calendar and next steps.
Court Hearing, Plea Offer And Trial Timing
At the Feb. 6 appearance, the teen was listed in charging documents as facing two counts of first-degree murder along with firearm use in a felony violent crime and related conspiracy and weapons counts. Prosecutors offered a negotiated sentence of life with all but 60 years suspended, an offer the defense indicated it would probably reject, according to Baltimore Witness. Defense attorneys also asked the court to ensure translators are available for witnesses and requested a five-day trial beginning June 8. Both sides are scheduled to return to reception court tomorrow to continue discussions about how the case will proceed.
Police Account Of The Pulaski Highway Shooting
According to a media advisory from the Baltimore Police Department, Southeast District officers responded around 4:45 p.m. on March 22, 2025 to a reported shooting in the 3200 block of Pulaski Highway. Officers found a 42-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the advisory said. Homicide detectives took over the investigation and asked anyone with information to contact the Southeast District Homicide Unit. The advisory did not address what later unfolded in juvenile reception court.
Video Trail And Evidence Investigators Say Tie Suspects To Scene
Charging documents reviewed by reporters describe detectives recovering surveillance footage that showed two suspects boarding a Maryland Transit Administration bus at North Avenue and Harford Road before the shooting, according to Baltimore Witness. A witness later identified the teen from surveillance images. Investigators say additional video allegedly captured one suspect repeatedly shooting the victim, and officers reported recovering five 9mm shell casings and three live rounds at the scene. Court filings also state that the defendant was seen taking off a blue-striped jacket before the shooting and that the clothing underneath appeared to match what the shooter was wearing in the footage.
What Comes Next In The Case
Prosecutors, defense attorneys and the court are expected to continue ironing out scheduling details at tomorrow's reception hearing. If the case moves ahead to trial, the lawyers have asked for a multi-day proceeding starting June 8. The killing of Fredi Lua was one of several March 2025 homicides that local reporters and police said helped drive a month-over-month increase in fatal shootings, highlighting a broader pattern investigators have been monitoring, as reported by WMAR-2 News. Detectives say they continue to rely heavily on witness statements and surveillance footage as the case moves through pretrial hearings.
Where The Charges Stand
The teen remains charged with two counts of first-degree murder along with related firearm and conspiracy counts. Under Maryland law, a first-degree murder conviction carries a maximum possible sentence of life in prison, and the state can seek life without the possibility of parole if it follows certain procedural requirements. Prosecutors must give advance written notice if they intend to pursue a life-without-parole sentence, a step that can influence both plea talks and trial strategy, according to Maryland statutes. The case is still in its pretrial phase, and no judge has set a firm trial date beyond the June window requested by counsel.
