What started as a routine 911 call for smoke at a Logan Circle area condo early Wednesday morning quickly turned into a homicide investigation after firefighters found a man bound and badly burned inside his unit, police said. Authorities identified the victim as 40-year-old Syed Hammad Hussain.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, DC Fire and EMS crews responded at about 3:33 a.m. to the 1400 block of Rhode Island Avenue NW after reports of smoke. First responders extinguished a small blaze, then discovered an adult male unconscious and unresponsive inside his apartment. MPD's release states the man had suffered blunt-force trauma and thermal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
As reported by NBC4 Washington, the incident report notes the victim was found "taped or tied up," and security-camera images from a neighboring building show him entering with three other people, one possibly a woman, shortly before the fire. NBC4 also cites DC Fire and EMS radio traffic in which responders declared a "confirmed body," and neighbors described seeing multiple police cars and fire trucks crowding the street outside the building.
MPD said Homicide Branch detectives are leading the investigation and are asking anyone with video or information to come forward. The department's release notes a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with tips is asked to call (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.
