A deadly collision on Boyers Road in Marion Township on Friday, Jan. 16, left a utility-terrain vehicle operator dead, injured several passengers in a paratransit van, and shut the roadway down for hours while crews picked through the wreckage. The Butler County coroner was called to the scene, and emergency responders described a long, messy cleanup before traffic could move again.
What Happened
Local reports say the crash involved a UTV and a Ford Transit paratransit van, with the impact reported shortly before 12:30 p.m. The UTV operator was later identified as John Martino, and six passengers from the van were taken to Grove City Hospital with minor injuries, according to Butler Eagle. Both vehicles suffered heavy damage, and responders remained on scene for hours to stabilise the area and clear debris.
Timeline And Official Response
The 911 call came into Butler County dispatch at about 12:25 p.m., and by the time television crews arrived, parts of the vehicles were scattered along the roadside, according to coverage by WPXI. The station later aired raw video that showed first responders, tow trucks, and investigators working side by side to remove the disabled vehicles and get Boyers Road reopened.
Road Closure And Crews On Scene
Boyers Road was shut down between Harrisville Road and West Sunbury Road while officials investigated the collision and removed the wreckage, according to local dispatch information cited by ButlerRadio. Marion Township and Harrisville volunteer fire companies assisted state police and ambulance crews during what turned into a multi-hour response.
UTV Safety And Road Risks
Safety officials have repeatedly warned that UTVs and ATVs are built for trails and fields, not public roads. Their higher center of gravity and off-road tires can make them especially unstable on pavement, particularly when mixed with regular traffic. Recent safety reporting notes that many fatal off-road vehicle crashes involve riding on roads, and that seat belts, helmets, and avoiding roadway travel altogether remain key protections, according to WPR.
Investigations And Next Steps
Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash while the Butler County coroner’s office conducts its examination and works to notify next of kin, Butler Eagle reports. The case drew fresh attention when WPXI aired raw video from the scene, and authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has additional information to contact state police as the probe continues.
