Nasir Nadim, 59, died after being struck by a box truck in Brooklyn Heights, authorities said. The incident occurred Jan. 23 near Cadman Plaza West and Clinton Street. Nadim was transported to New York–Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he died a week later.
As reported by News 12 Brooklyn, investigators say Nadim and the Freightliner box truck were involved in an earlier collision blocks away near State Street and Clinton Street. After that initial crash, Nadim allegedly grabbed the driver's-side door and held on as the truck traveled roughly 600 feet northbound on Cadman Plaza West around 1 p.m. on Jan. 23.
Police said Nadim eventually fell from the truck and was struck by it, suffering injuries that paramedics described as critical. He was transported to New York–Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he died on Jan. 30.
Investigation and Possible Charges
According to police, the driver of the Freightliner did not remain at the scene. Investigators are searching for both the vehicle and the operator, and they are reviewing available surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses.
Under New York's Vehicle and Traffic Law §600, leaving the scene of an accident that results in death can be prosecuted as a class D felony, which can carry potential prison time and fines. Whether such charges will be pursued in this case will depend on what investigators are able to confirm about the driver's actions and knowledge at the time of the crash.
Cadman Plaza's Safety Context
Cadman Plaza West is a busy connector that feeds into major traffic corridors, which has helped put it on the radar of city planners and traffic safety advocates. The city's Vision Zero map tracks fatal and injury crashes and is used to guide the Department of Transportation in targeting dangerous intersections for redesigns and enforcement.
Authorities have not announced any arrests in Nadim's case. The investigation remains active, and police say they will release additional details as they gather more evidence.
