Governor Kathy Hochul announced the approval of a construction contract to demolish an existing parking garage at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University (SUNY Downstate) Hospital in Brooklyn. The demolition is part of a plan to construct a new hospital annex, which will include an ambulatory surgery center and expanded cardiology and oncology services, according to a statement from the Governor's office.
Following the approval of the construction contract, part of a $1.1 billion plan announced last December, SUNY Downstate Hospital is advancing its broader effort to update its facilities and services. The garage, which has been out of service for an extended period, is scheduled for demolition as part of the planned improvements to the hospital’s infrastructure in Central Brooklyn.
Governor Hochul emphasized that every New Yorker deserves access to high-quality medical care, highlighting the expected improvement in service quality once the new addition is completed. The demolition of the existing facility is seen as both a physical step and a symbolic move toward advancing healthcare services. Dr. Wayne J. Riley, President of SUNY Downstate, stated that the announcement marks a shift from planning to action.
SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. expressed appreciation for the investment, recognizing SUNY Downstate's important role in the community. Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) President Mary E. Sullivan highlighted the significance of the project in improving working conditions for staff, who play a key role in providing care in aging facilities. She emphasized that advancing the project is crucial not only for patients but also for staff, who require safe, modern, and fully supported work environments. Sullivan acknowledged the understanding of staff needs shown by Governor Hochul and the continued support from the State Legislature.
The principal funding for the initiative includes $750 million in capital from the FY 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 Enacted State Budgets, along with SUNY's expected annual capital allocations. Russo Development Enterprises, Inc., a Woman-Owned Business Enterprise, will lead the demolition.
