Just as the echoes of Carmen Ohio faded over the weekend, BuckeyeThon, The Ohio State University's student-run philanthropy powerhouse, was already regrouping with eyes set on the next fundraising year, after pulling in an impressive $872,919.13 for Nationwide Children’s Hospital's special units, as reported by OSU News. "BuckeyeThon is always in the planning phase," expressed the organization's executive vice president Serena-Jenna Rabi, noting the perpetual cycle of their dance marathon preparations.
Recognized as Ohio's largest student-run philanthropic effort, BuckeyeThon since hitting the scene in 1999, has funneled over $15 million towards childhood cancer research, bolstered by its flagship annual dance marathon which, according to Rabi in an interview, is deemed an Ohio State bucket list activity, "BuckeyeThon is part of the Ohio State blood," she added in a statement obtained by OSU News. However, the sheer scale of the event belies a year-round labyrinth of planning, coordination and meticulous orchestration, handled by a dedicated collective of nearly two dozen student leaders stewarded by Student Life staff.
The training ground BuckeyeThon presents for its participants is formidable, with Rabi articulating in a statement obtained by OSU News that the experience offers "all these professional scenarios and skills that you end up using every day once you graduate." Tracing her own trajectory from an attendee at eight years old to steering the organization's vice presidents, she now plays an instrumental role in executing key initiatives like Day of Miracles, the BuckeyeThon 5K, and the overarching management of recruitment, funding and advocacy.
Despite the annual goal of hitting the $1 million mark in donations, Rabi is clear that the essence of BuckeyeThon's mission transcends mere numbers it's about kindling a lifelong flame for philanthropy among students, a stance simultaneously nurtured by Ohio State ideals and Rabi's own aspirations, "Our true goal is to create future philanthropists," she said, looking forward to sustaining her involvement post-graduation and into her medical career, according to her narrative given to OSU News.
Rabi's passion underscores the persistent message that BuckeyeThon, much more than a rhythmic congregation, offers an early and formative plunge into the world of giving back. She encouraged all students to participate, "It is so much more than just a dance marathon", with the organization seeking to engrain philanthropy as a lifelong pursuit that stretches far beyond the university realm.
