In the wake of a brutal winter storm that blustered through Charlotte, local animal welfare officers have rescued two dogs found tethered outdoors, as first reported by The Charlotte Observer. The canines, now known as Mickey and Minnie, were subjected to the harsh elements, including snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches and subfreezing temperatures.
The incident sparked significant attention across social media, leading to an investigation by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control. The organization detailed in a Facebook post that they were alerted to the situation by multiple 311 callers expressing concern for the dogs, which lacked adequate provisions for food, water, or shelter. According to QC News, a seizure letter was issued and proceedings to forfeit ownership rights have begun.
Furthering the narrative, WSOC-TV reported that the dogs are currently receiving ongoing care at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control, where the staff is keeping them both safe and warm. Medical attention was promptly provided, and the agency has kept them under close supervision to ensure their recovery.
Mickey and Minnie are now participating in daily enrichment programs at the shelter, aimed at improving their well-being, staff told WSOC-TV. These activities utilize comfort items and community-donated treats to help stimulate the dogs' minds, while they adjust to their new environment. The community support, has been critical in supplying these enrichment items and plays an essential role in the animals' rehabilitation process.
As the dogs' story garnered public empathy, many took to social media platforms to express their condemnation of the neglect they faced. One user, Rehana Moore, wrote on the Animal Care and Control Facebook page, "How can people be so heartless," reflecting the sentiment echoed by many others outraged by the circumstances leading to the dogs' plight, as per The Charlotte Observer. For those interested in lending a hand, the shelter has encouraged donations of enrichment items and supplies, which can be made through their facility's support channels.
