Charlotte's skyline just got a little brighter this week with the inauguration of Trella Uptown, a new mixed-income development situated in the Uptown district. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the completion of the project which aims to blend affordable and market-rate homes in a single residential space. As reported by the City of Charlotte, Trella Uptown features a total of 353 units, out of which 106 are affordable homes designed to accommodate families earning between 30 and 50 percent of the area median income.
Notably, all residents, irrespective of their income level, have equal access to the building's amenities, promoting a sense of community and inclusivity. The affordable and market-rate apartments are indistinguishable from one another, creating an environment where people from diverse economic backgrounds can live as neighbors without stigma. Bringing together families earning between $33,650 and $56,100 for a family of four, Trella Uptown rests on the foundation of socioeconomic diversity.
The development is a result of the collaboration between Horizon Development Properties, Inc., the real estate development branch of INLIVIAN, and Urban Atlantic Development. This private-public partnership reflects the potential for cross-sector cooperation to address and fulfill the housing requirements of diverse communities. The City of Charlotte contributed significantly, with an investment of $3.2 million from the Housing Trust Fund, which commonly backs projects aimed at households earning 30 to 80 percent of the area median income.
Moreover, project-based vouchers contribute crucially to keeping rent affordable for those who qualify, allowing residents to spend no more than 30 percent of their income on housing. As their financial circumstances change, these vouchers provide a safety net, adjusting to ensure continuous stability. The flexibility of this assistance can adjust as needed, ensuring a stable living situation for current and future qualifying residents.
All Trella Uptown residents can enjoy amenities like a fitness center, a maker space, a podcast studio, and rooftop pickleball courts. There are also outdoor spaces, a pet spa, and the convenience of in-unit washers and dryers. The goal of such amenities is to ensure that regardless of income, everyone has the same quality of lifestyle and opportunities for interaction within the development. As Charlotte evolves and expands, projects like Trella Uptown stand as testaments to how strategic city investments and partnerships can constructively forge neighborhoods that promote affordability and opportunity.
