Charlotte's streets recently saw a surge in traffic enforcement as authorities sought to tamp down on accident-contributing violations, specifically at a notorious intersection known for its vehicular mishaps. In a statement obtained by SFist, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department revealed that the University City, Hickory Grove, and Independence Divisions, in collaboration with their Motors Unit, conducted a targeted operation at the intersection of W.T. Harris Blvd and North Tryon St.
The crackdown was a response to a recent spike in crashes, many caused by drivers running red lights. In just two hours, officers made 54 traffic stops and issued 64 charges. Most of these, 41 in total, were for running red lights. CMPD described the operation as proactive, data-driven policing, using information to identify and address safety issues in the city.
Other citations during the operation included six for expired or invalid registrations, two for driving with a revoked license, and three for driving without a license. CMPD also issued three window tint violations, four seatbelt violations, one for texting while driving, and four additional charges, including an expired or invalid insurance citation, according to CMPD’s official Facebook page.
