What began as a late-night dispute inside a Columbia apartment ended in tragedy early Sunday when Howard County police say 25-year-old Jaelon Minor was fatally stabbed, allegedly by his roommate.

Officers were called to the 7600 block of Woodpark Lane around 1:40 a.m., where they found Minor suffering from stab wounds inside the apartment. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Howard County police.

Investigators identified the suspected attacker as 26-year-old Donavan Townsend, who police say fled the apartment immediately after the stabbing. Authorities report that Townsend was quickly located a short time later and taken into custody.

Police Account Of The Arrest

Detectives say the stabbing followed an altercation between the two roommates inside the apartment, according to FOX 25. After the attack, Townsend allegedly left the scene, but officers say they rapidly tracked him down and arrested him.

Police say the investigation is still active as detectives work to collect physical evidence and speak with witnesses who may have seen or heard the confrontation.

Where This Fits In Local Safety Efforts

The killing comes against the backdrop of broader concerns about violence in Columbia. A series of high-profile incidents in recent years pushed Howard County officials to step up law enforcement visibility in key parts of town, including downtown, the Merriweather District, and the lakefront.

Those efforts included opening a satellite police office at the Mall in Columbia and dedicating 24-hour patrols in and around the shopping center in response to deadly teen-involved shootings, according to WMAR2 News. County leaders have framed the expanded presence as a way to deter violence and reassure residents and visitors.

Investigation And How To Help

Howard County police say the probe into Minor’s death remains ongoing and are asking anyone with information about the case to come forward. Tipsters can call 410-313-STOP or email [email protected], according to FOX 25.

Police have not yet publicly announced formal charges against Townsend. Detectives are especially interested in hearing from residents who may have video or any other information that could help piece together what happened inside the apartment before the stabbing.
