In a post on the Columbus Division of Police's social media page, an account was detailed of how a routine traffic stop escalated into a multi-zone chase, culminating in an arrest—thanks to a little help from above. On January 29, officers on the ground were outmaneuvered by a suspect in a stolen vehicle who fled a traffic stop. It was then that the Division's helicopter was called into action to take the pursuit to the skies.
The aerial unit tracked the suspect as the vehicle weaved through three different zones, a pursuit that spanned several miles and required coordination among multiple personnel. According to the Columbus Division of Police, the suspect eventually ditched the car and tried to vanish between buildings on foot. However, the watchful eyes from above continued to relay the suspect's position to officers on the ground. "Great work was demonstrated by all the officers involved in locating this suspect and the resulting arrest," the statement on Facebook read.
The use of police helicopters in urban pursuits has long been a topic of conversation, balancing the benefits of high vantage point surveillance against the costs and risks associated with aerial pursuits. Advocates for the use of helicopters often cite their ability to provide a comprehensive visual of a suspect's movements, which can be instrumental in minimizing dangers to both the public and officers in high-speed chases.
