A Columbus woman will spend at least 15 years in prison after a Franklin County judge sentenced her on Saturday in the fatal shooting of a northeast Columbus man last summer. The case traces back to an Aug. 3, 2024, incident on the 800 block of Murray Avenue that left 36-year-old Dajuan Rios mortally wounded. He was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and later pronounced dead. Court records indicate the pair had a history of domestic violence, and prosecutors reached a plea deal in January that led to this week’s prison term.
Sentence and plea
According to WBNS, Brittney McBride pleaded guilty in January to felonious assault and involuntary manslaughter. A Franklin County judge accepted that plea and on Saturday ordered her to serve a prison term ranging from 15 to 20.5 years.
The shooting and arrest
Officers responding to the 800 block of Murray Avenue in the early morning hours of Aug. 3, 2024, found Rios suffering from a gunshot wound, according to reporting by NBC4i. Medics transported him to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators later identified McBride as a suspect after tracing a 911 call and conducting interviews, the outlet reported.
Court records show prior violence
Court records reviewed by WBNS describe what investigators say was a violent domestic relationship between McBride and Rios. Those documents, along with earlier police reports, also link McBride to a September 2023 incident in which Rios was hospitalized with multiple stab wounds, details prosecutors highlighted during plea negotiations.
Next steps
Because McBride accepted the plea agreement, the case moved more quickly to sentencing than it would have if it had gone to trial. Sentencing entries have been filed with the Franklin County courts, and McBride will be transferred into the state corrections system to begin serving her court-ordered term. Victim services resources and court records will continue to serve as the public channels for any follow-up filings in the case.
