After roughly three decades as a community staple for southeast Franklin County, the Jerry L. Garver YMCA is headed for a permanent shutdown. The YMCA of Central Ohio says the branch’s final day of operations will be Friday, May 29, with ownership of the property expected to transfer on Saturday, May 30. The organization has agreed to sell the site to the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority and plans to keep many programs running through the spring while it scrambles to secure replacement space nearby.
What the Y says
In a detailed FAQ posted on its website, YMCA of Central Ohio officials say a comprehensive review of the Jerry L. Garver facility found building constraints, falling attendance and other operational hurdles that made the branch unsustainable over the long haul. According to the Y, Head Start, preschool and the swim team will all continue through May while staff work to lock in alternate nearby locations for preschool and day-camp programs. Leadership also notes that employees affected by the closure will receive direct outreach that lays out available support, reemployment options and key dates as the transition plan firms up.
Members react
Several regulars told WBNS they were anything but happy about the decision. Parent Jaymi Hutchinson said her 14‑year‑old son was upset by the announcement and pointed out that the Garver branch’s location, about an eight‑minute drive for her family, was a big reason they relied on it. Longtime participant Santina Burt told the station she grew up coming to the Y and was “sad” to hear it would close. Mark Harper of the Greater South East Area Commission warned that losing the Garver branch means the community is losing its only nearby recreational facility that offers programming for both kids and older adults.
What members need to know
According to the FAQ, members are being asked to choose a new home branch by March 31. Those who do not make a selection will see their memberships automatically reassigned starting April 1 to the Reynoldsburg Community Center YMCA, with all moves completed by May 1. The Garver building will stay open for programs through May 29 so families and regulars can finish out the season, and the Y says membership rates will remain the same for anyone who transfers to Reynoldsburg. Families enrolled in Head Start, preschool or registered summer day camp will get direct updates spelling out where those programs will be held next school year.
What’s next for the site
The YMCA confirms it has a deal in place to sell the Jerry L. Garver property to the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority, presenting the sale as a way to keep the site focused on serving local families. A CMHA representative told WBNS it is “too early to discuss plans” for the parcel and declined to lay out a development timeline. CMHA’s website notes that the authority frequently undertakes mixed‑income and senior housing projects across Franklin County, although no formal redevelopment proposal for the Garver site has been filed publicly.
For now, YMCA officials say members with questions can call 614‑689‑2026 or check the organization’s Garver FAQ for updates. The closure brings a long run for a neighborhood hub to a close, and families along with local leaders say they will be keeping a close eye on how replacement services and future housing plans unfold over the coming months.
