A shocking and tragic event took place in Detroit's west side on Tuesday, as a community regular lost his life in a violent carjacking. At approximately 4:30 a.m., the victim, who often frequented a Sunoco gas station on Joy Road near Greenfield Road, was assaulted and run over by his own Jeep Compass. CBS Detroit reported that police say the suspect physically attacked the victim after being found in his vehicle.
The situation escalated when the assailant re-entered the man’s vehicle after the assault and proceeded to run over the victim multiple times, which resulted in his death. According to Local 4 News, a 25-year-old suspect was captured by authorities following a short pursuit that ended near the intersection of Warren and Greenfield. Police described the incident as a vicious, random attack, with no known motive at the time of the investigation.
The gas station where the crime occurred had become an unintended shrine as locals expressed disbelief and sorrow. A customer familiar with the victim, referred to only as "Preech," shared with Local 4 News, "It was sadness, you know what I’m saying, like, surprised, but damn near angry." The community knew the victim as a giving man, one who was always willing to assist others, reflecting a local loss far beyond just a singular act of violence.
Residents and the gas station's owner, who spoke to CBS News Detroit, did not know the victim personally but noted that he was a kind figure who lived in the area and was a regular presence at the gas station. "It's a sad situation. The guy was a local guy, stayed across the street over there. I just hate to hear that about him," said Cocoa, a local resident. Police, who are still investigating, have yet to release the names of either the victim or the suspect.
Detroit Police Captain Marcus Thirlkill conveyed the grim nature of the crime in a statement obtained by FOX 2 Detroit, calling it a "heinous act." Despite the quick apprehension of the assailant, the incident underscores a traumatic reality for the Detroit community that must grapple with the randomness and brutality of such acts. As the investigation continues, the city reckons with the fragile state of public safety and the loss of one of its own.
