Long Island has recently seen interactions between community members and ICE agents in several areas. According to PIX11, a volunteer with Islip Forward was warned of possible arrest by federal agents at the Central Islip Fire Department after approaching them on the property. Video recorded around 9:30 a.m. last Friday shows the volunteer being told he was trespassing on public property, after which the fire department restricted outside access to the building.
After the incident, a protest took place at a Brentwood 7-Eleven gas station. Demonstrators gathered around a vehicle they believed was carrying federal agents. Reporting from News 12 Long Island shows participants using whistles and car horns during the protest.
The Legal Observation Project, recently introduced by New York Attorney General Letitia James, is intended to monitor the activities of federal agents throughout New York State. PIX11 reported that the program is designed to document events and provide witness accounts during situations such as protests. The Attorney General’s office has also invited residents to submit information related to federal immigration enforcement actions through a secure online portal, which may be reviewed for potential follow-up.
Ahmad Perez, an advocate with Islip Forward, described an interaction with ICE agents at the Central Islip Firehouse in which he said he was warned of possible arrest after approaching them on the property. He stated that the agents did not have prior authorization to be on the public facility. Following this and other related incidents, the Central Islip Fire Department has kept the gate to the facility closed.
Suffolk County police were present during the protest in Brentwood and reported that no injuries or arrests occurred. Regarding the federal agents, ICE has not issued a public statement about either the recent incidents or a previous appearance at the same firehouse in December, when fire commissioners said there was no cooperation with the agency. Local news organizations have continued to request comment from ICE in response to questions about these events.
