Following a surprise visit to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) holding facility in the George H. Fallon Federal Building, Congressman Jamie Raskin voiced urgent concern over the "staggeringly overcrowded" conditions faced by detainees. According to WBAL-TV, Raskin described encountering 134 adults jammed into an office space that, while being nowhere near the staff's definition of full capacity, seemed immensely overcrowded to onlookers.

During visits, both Raskin and Maryland Congresswoman April McClain Delaney, witnessed firsthand the cramped and inadequate amenities provided to detainees. As per a CBS News Baltimore report, detainees slept on the floors without showers, and rooms holding upwards of 55 people offered only one toilet. McClain Delaney detailed the harsh conditions, describing a room with a makeshift bathroom and detainees expressing hunger and thirst.

Compounding the issue, a video that had gone viral last month depicted the dire situation. Maryland officials confirmed the video originated from within the George H. Fallon building, McClain Delaney told CBS News Baltimore, exposing how a facility designed for a 12-hour hold was being used to detain individuals for significantly longer periods.

Raskin, demanding a shift in practices, said, "What we really need, and I wish we had, was a Congress that was committed to doing some basic oversight so we could have humanitarian conditions," in a visit that left him pushing for a congressional investigation into the facility's status. Misunderstanding the issue, other lawmakers based on pictures that circulated showing distressing scenes within the Baltimore ICE facility, called for changes. "I do not think that Americans or Marylanders would be proud that people are being forced to eat and sleep and live under those conditions," Raskin told WBAL-TV.

The revelation of these conditions has triggered discussions around the imperative for humane treatment of ICE detainees. With Raskin advocating for further oversight and the involvement of the Immigration Subcommittee, the plight of those detained at ICE facilities in Baltimore has captured the attention of officials and the public alike, sparking calls for immediate reform and a reevaluation of detention standards.
