A 61-year-old Matthews man is facing a felony charge after police say a roadside argument on Chesney Glen Drive turned into a violent baton attack that left a woman injured and her vehicle damaged.
James Washer was arrested this week and booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail, where records show he is being held on a $100,000 bond. His next court date is set for March 17, according to authorities.
What police say
The confrontation started on Saturday when drivers exchanged words that quickly escalated, as detailed by WCNC. The woman told officers Washer shattered one of her car windows and then hit her in the head, neck and arm with a collapsible baton.
According to the report, she was able to drive away from the scene. Matthews police later obtained arrest warrants charging Washer with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and injury to personal property.
Arrest and booking
Officers say they arrested Washer at his home in Charlotte on Monday. He was then taken to the Mecklenburg County Jail and booked on the assault charge.

Charges, bond and next steps
As reported by WCNC, a judge set Washer's bond at $100,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 17, 2026.
Matthews police are reminding drivers that if they believe someone is following them, they should call 911 immediately and keep driving until dispatchers tell them what to do. Prosecutors will review the case and decide how to proceed as it moves through the court system.
What this means
The assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill charge is a felony that can carry serious prison time if Washer is convicted. He is presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty in court.
Officials said anyone who has information about Saturday's incident on Chesney Glen Drive should contact the Matthews Police Department.
