A late-afternoon drive on a rural stretch of Route 982 turned fatal yesterday when a Mount Pleasant man was killed in a head-on collision in Bullskin Township, Fayette County. Investigators say his sedan crossed the center line and slammed into another vehicle. Emergency crews pronounced the driver dead at the scene, while the other motorist walked away without injuries. State troopers shut down the roadway as they launched their investigation.
Pennsylvania State Police told WTAE that the crash happened around 4 p.m. Friday as the sedan was negotiating a curve near Route 31, when it drifted into the opposite lane and hit the oncoming car head-on. The Fayette County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 50-year-old David Lancaster of Mount Pleasant and confirmed he died at the scene.
Where It Happened
The portion of Route 982 involved in the wreck is a rural, twisting state road, dotted with sharp bends and junctions near Mount Pleasant that can turn routine maneuvers into tense moments for drivers. PennDOT District 12 notes that the four-county region that includes Fayette County logged 691 impaired-driving crashes in 2022, with 43 of those resulting in deaths. Transportation officials often point to challenging roadway geometry and shifting seasonal conditions as factors that can heighten crash risks on similar state routes.
Investigation
Pennsylvania State Police troopers remain on the case and have not yet released any conclusions about speed, impairment, or possible mechanical issues. The Fayette County Coroner's Office will issue the official cause and manner of death, and authorities say more information will be made public as the investigation moves forward. As reported by WTAE, troopers believe the sedan crossed into the oncoming lane while navigating the curve.
