Dan Cox, a Republican who previously vied for Maryland's gubernatorial seat in 2022, has announced another run for the office, as confirmed by his filing on the Maryland elections board website. Cox, a former delegate, had Rob Krop—an owner of The Machine Gun Nest and Cox's past legal client—as his pick for lieutenant governor, a move suggesting a bid to solidify the conservative base.
Cox, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump during his initial campaign, is known for staunch conservative views, including his opposition to "critical race theory" and "gender identity indoctrination" in schools as well as his criticism of COVID-19 lockdown measures, as detailed by Maryland Matters. These positions, however, did not resonate with the majority in the largely Democratic state, culminating in a significant loss to current Governor Wes Moore. Cox's earlier tenure in the Maryland House of Delegates was marked by representation of Carroll and Frederick counties, and his familial background as a father of ten is often noted in discussions of his personal profile.
Former Governor Larry Hogan, a moderate Republican figure, recently announced his withdrawal from future gubernatorial contests, potentially impacting the Republican landscape in Maryland, as per information on WMAR2 News. Despite this, Cox's entrance into the gubernatorial race adds to an already crowded GOP field, which includes business figures and legislators considering bids of their own. The candidacy registrations, including Cox's and those of other challengers, continue toward the June primary deadline.
