An early-morning ride along Lake Eustis ended in tragedy yesterday when a bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run on a lakeside stretch of road, and investigators are now turning to the public for help. The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. on Lakeshore Boulevard near Eustis Road, police said. The rider, identified as 48-year-old Tracy Schievenin, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Eustis Police Department, an unknown vehicle struck Schievenin from behind while she was riding in the southbound lane, throwing her from the bicycle. The driver kept going without stopping. Emergency crews shut down the southbound lane while investigators documented the scene, and the roadway was later reopened. As of Friday morning, investigators had not released a description of the vehicle involved, as reported by WFTV.
Police Seek Tips
The Eustis Police Department is asking anyone who knows anything about the crash or the unidentified vehicle to come forward. Tips can be phoned to (352) 483-5400 or emailed to [email protected], per the Eustis Police Department. Investigators say they are especially interested in dash-cam or surveillance video from around the time of the collision.
Legal Consequences for Leaving the Scene
Under Florida law, leaving the scene of a crash that results in death is a first-degree felony and carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of four years, with potential penalties of up to 30 years and fines, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The statute increases penalties when a driver is impaired and requires anyone involved in a crash that causes injury or death to stop and render aid.
Where This Happened and Local Safety
The stretch of Lakeshore Boulevard where the crash occurred runs along Lake Eustis and has been under recent local scrutiny. The city closed part of Lakeshore Drive earlier this week to assess a washout, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando. Lake County has seen other deadly bicycle collisions in the last year, including a May 2025 crash on County Road 473 that killed a 69-year-old rider, highlighting ongoing safety concerns for cyclists, per WESH.
Investigators are still piecing together what happened on Lakeshore Boulevard, and no arrests have been announced. Anyone with video or information is asked to contact the Eustis Police Department at (352) 483-5400 or through the department’s website, as reported by WFTV.
