A 55-year-old man was killed and a 54-year-old woman hospitalized after a violent two-vehicle crash late Tuesday morning on U.S. Highway 90 in Medina County, authorities said. Troopers responded to a stretch of the highway west of D'Hanis, where the impact left a pickup overturned and debris scattered across the road, briefly shutting down lanes while first responders treated the injured and cleared the scene, according to KSAT.
According to a preliminary report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers were dispatched around 11 a.m. to U.S. Highway 90 near mile marker 520, west of D'Hanis and FM 1796, after a Chevrolet Colorado hit a trailer attached to a Toyota Tundra. The collision caused the Tundra to roll. Troopers identified the Tundra's driver as 55-year-old Roberto Mares Jr., who was pronounced dead at the scene. A 54-year-old woman riding in the Tundra was taken to a San Antonio hospital, while the Colorado's driver was not injured. DPS investigators are still piecing together what happened, as reported by KSAT.
Where it happened
U.S. Highway 90, a busy rural corridor west of San Antonio, has seen more than its share of trouble lately. In December, a flipped semi-truck shut down lanes in Medina County and triggered warnings about fog and slick roads, a reminder of how quickly conditions on that stretch can snarl traffic, as reported by MySA.
State response and safety advice
The Texas Department of Public Safety, which led the response to Tuesday's crash, continues to hammer home a few simple habits it says can prevent deadly wrecks: follow the "Move Over or Slow Down" law, put away distractions and always buckle up. Those reminders are part of DPS' broader "Keeping Texas Roads Safe" campaign, which outlines basic steps drivers can take to protect themselves and first responders, per Texas DPS.
Troopers say the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information or dash-cam video that might help is asked to contact local law enforcement or the Texas Department of Public Safety.
