One person died Tuesday morning in a violent head-on collision that shut down a rural stretch of N.C. Highway 56 in Franklin County, according to state troopers.
The crash happened on NC-56 near Louisburg, between Green Hill Road and Fred Wilder Road, and halted traffic while emergency crews worked the scene. Troopers said the driver of a Nissan Altima was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers' preliminary findings
According to investigators, the Nissan crossed left of the center line and slammed head-on into a Chevrolet, killing the Nissan's driver. The State Highway Patrol said the driver was not wearing a seat belt, and that impairment does not appear to be a factor. Those details come from WRAL.
Where the crash happened
N.C. Highway 56 is a mostly two-lane rural route that cuts through Creedmoor, Franklinton and Louisburg. Outside the town centers, the road narrows and leaves drivers with very little room for error. Route descriptions highlight the highway's rural character, which can make head-on collisions especially deadly, according to AARoads.
Seat belts and the investigation
Troopers said the driver was unrestrained, a detail that safety research has long flagged as a major factor in fatal crashes. Nationwide, nearly half of passenger-vehicle occupants killed in 2023 were not wearing seat belts, and seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by roughly 45 percent for people in passenger cars, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.
The State Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation and has not released the driver's name, pending notification of next of kin.
Anyone with information that could help investigators is asked to contact the State Highway Patrol's regional office. Troopers said they did not have additional details on other possible injuries at the time of their report.
