A Friday afternoon ride on State Route 750 ended in tragedy when a scooter rider was struck and killed in the eastbound lanes near East Powell Road in Delaware County. The crash happened just before 3:45 p.m., prompting emergency crews to respond and troopers to briefly shut down eastbound traffic while they worked the scene and began their investigation. The roadway was reopened later that afternoon.
According to 10TV, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the scooter rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers are withholding the victim's identity until family members can be notified. The driver of the vehicle that hit the scooter was taken into custody, although a dispatcher told 10TV it was still unclear whether any charges would be filed. Troopers from the Delaware Post stayed on scene as the crash was investigated.
Micromobility Crashes Are Rising Nationally
The fatal wreck near Powell lands against a backdrop of fast-rising crash numbers for riders of scooters and other small electric devices across the country. A recent analysis in JAMA Network Open found a sharp increase in injuries linked to electric scooters and e-bikes between 2017 and 2022. Researchers reported large jumps in emergency department visits and hospitalizations for e-scooter riders and noted that helmet use was lower than among riders of conventional bicycles.
Investigation and Legal Questions
Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Delaware Post are leading the investigation and have not yet said whether speed, impairment, or helmet use played a role in the crash. The driver was taken into custody at the scene, and a dispatcher told 10TV that potential charges remain unknown while the probe continues. Authorities are expected to release additional information through official channels as they determine next steps.
Where the Crash Happened

That stretch carries heavy local traffic and multiple turning movements, which can increase risk for vulnerable road users, according to route descriptions in Ohio State Route 750.
