Denver is soaking up a sunny, almost springlike start to the week, with highs near 68°F on Monday, February 16. The warm spell will not last long, though. By Tuesday, temperatures begin to tumble, and winds crank up, boosting fire weather concerns across the plains and threatening a rough commute. In the high country, snow returns early Tuesday and lingers into midweek, likely slowing travel on mountain passes. Keep outdoor plans loose and keep an eye on the forecast over the next 48 hours.
Afternoon Winds And Fire Danger
South and southwest winds will strengthen through Monday and ramp up even more on Tuesday, with gusts of 35–50 mph expected across lower elevations and stronger bursts possible along the Palmer Divide and Cheyenne Ridge. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for parts of the plains from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2026, and a Fire Weather Watch for much of Tuesday, February 17, 2026, as low humidity and strong winds increase the chance of rapid fire spread. Avoid outdoor burning, secure loose yard items before they end up on the next block, and report any smoke you see right away. For official details, see the NWS Denver/Boulder.
Mountain Snow And Travel
Snow moves back into the high country early Tuesday, February 17, 2026, with a Winter Storm Warning in effect for many mountain zones from 2 a.m. Tuesday through 5 a.m. Thursday, February 19, 2026, according to the National Weather Service. Blowing snow and gusty winds will reduce visibility along the I‑70 corridor and other passes, making travel slow or even dangerous at times, and chains or traction devices may be required. We covered the initial warm spell and the watch on Feb. 14 in our earlier report on the sunny 60s warmup for background, as per Hoodline. Expect road delays and check conditions before heading for the mountains.
What To Do
Secure patio furniture and outdoor gear, postpone any open burns, and stash extra water and blankets in your vehicle if you are planning a trip to higher terrain. If you have outdoor plans on Tuesday, consider moving activities indoors since gusty winds and low humidity on the plains will increase fire danger. Check the National Weather Service and COtrip for the latest watches, warnings, and road conditions before you head out.
