Downtown Gig Harbor’s long stretch without a neighborhood market may finally be winding down. Three years after Harbor General closed its doors, a new specialty market called Gather Gig Harbor is slated to open in the heart of town by fall, according to its owners.
The market, led by sisters Pouneh Minovi Kaufman and Mandy Minovi, will focus on custom charcuterie, soups, salads, sandwiches and ice cream, blending grab-and-go food with a slate of community programs. The pair bought a property on Harborview Drive earlier this year and are working through city approvals before construction begins.
As reported by The News Tribune, the front building on the site is expected to house the specialty foods market, while a second building in back is planned as a longer-term community event space. The owners told the paper they intend to meet Gig Harbor’s historic downtown design standards as they move through permitting and build-out.
Menu, suppliers and community programs
Gather Gig Harbor will tap into the owners’ existing catering operation, Harbor Bites and Boards, to stock prepackaged charcuterie and other ready-to-go offerings. “We plan to support local families facing food insecurity,” one owner wrote, according to The News Tribune.
The back building is slated to evolve into a hub for gatherings, with plans for cooking classes, book signings, workshops and free space for customer groups over time.
Why this matters for downtown
Downtown Gig Harbor has gone years without a full-service grocery store. A QFC closed in 2011, leaving smaller markets and cafes to carry the load. Harbor General, which opened in 2015 and then abruptly shut down in March 2023, had become a local fixture before its sudden exit highlighted just how thin the options were, according to Gig Harbor Now.
Gather Gig Harbor is not a traditional supermarket, but for residents who have been missing a central spot to pick up prepared foods and everyday bites, the arrival of a specialty market in the core of downtown is a notable shift.
Timeline and next steps
The owners have told reporters they are aiming to open Gather Gig Harbor by fall, while renovations to the back building could stretch to at least a year, according to reporting republished by Yahoo. Once permits are approved, the plan is to phase the project so the market opens first, followed by the community space as construction wraps up.
For now, the team is working with city staff on design and permitting details and say they will share firmer dates as approvals come through. If everything stays on track, downtown residents could see a new prepared-foods market by fall and, with it, a small but significant step toward easing the neighborhood’s longstanding grocery gap.
