The Durham County Sheriff’s Office Anti-Crime and Narcotics Unit (SAC/Narc), with assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation, seized four kilograms of fentanyl during a search at a residence on Newland Place in Durham. Authorities reported finding additional narcotics, firearms, and a large amount of cash at the location.

Rodney William Ephraim, 49, faces multiple charges, including trafficking in fentanyl, possession with intent to sell and deliver a Schedule IV controlled substance, and felony possession of marijuana. Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead stated that as little as two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal. Ephraim is being held without bond at the Durham County Detention Center and made his initial court appearance earlier today.

Law enforcement officials reported recovering multiple types of illegal drugs during the operation. In addition to fentanyl, officers seized approximately 3.8 kilograms of marijuana, 215 grams of cocaine, 12 grams of heroin, and 23 grams of mushrooms. Authorities also noted that the drugs were found near several firearms, including an AR-15 and an AK-style rifle.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office reported ongoing efforts to address opioid-related issues in the community. The agency was the first in North Carolina to offer Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) to individuals housed at the detention facility. Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead said investigators are working with state, local, and federal agencies to disrupt the distribution of illegal drugs.
