The Eastern Heights neighborhood in Elyria briefly turned into a search grid on Saturday after an 18-year-old man took off from a traffic stop, sending officers scrambling through side streets and backyards. Police identified the suspect as Elliot Guzman, who they say is tied to an attempted burglary earlier in the week. A firearm that officers believe may be stolen was found near where the vehicle was stopped, but Guzman was still on the loose into the evening.
According to investigators, Guzman and three others had been taken into custody Thursday in connection with an attempted daytime burglary on Longfellow Avenue. Guzman later posted bond at the Lorain County Jail on burglary, drug and weapon-related charges and is currently on probation. On Saturday, officers reported seeing Guzman place what they believed was a firearm into a black Cadillac and moved in for a stop. The car came to a halt on Kent Circle, and Guzman bolted on foot through nearby backyards as officers followed. Door-to-door checks and follow-up interviews continued as the search unfolded, according to Cleveland 19.
Police set up a perimeter and pulled in extra units while detectives and patrol officers canvassed the area. Anyone with tips or sightings was urged to call Elyria dispatch at 440-323-3302 or dial 911. That contact information is listed on the City of Elyria police page.
Police response and public safety
Officers requested a K9 unit from neighboring North Ridgeville to search yards and nearby wooded patches, and investigators recovered a firearm they believe is linked to Guzman. Police cautioned residents not to approach anyone matching the suspect’s description and said updates would be shared as new information comes in. Those tactical details and the discovery of the weapon were described to reporters at the scene, according to Cleveland 19.
How agencies work together
The Elyria Police Department notes that it maintains cooperative agreements with nearby departments and federal partners that can be tapped for more complex incidents, which helps explain how specialized teams can arrive quickly during an active search. That ongoing coordination is highlighted in the department’s public materials and is meant to boost staffing and tools when a case intensifies. More information is available on the City of Elyria police page.
Legal status
Guzman is currently facing allegations tied to burglary and related weapon and drug charges that preceded his posting bond earlier this week, and police say he remains a person of interest in the ongoing investigation. As with any active case, those allegations have not been tested in court, and investigators say they will release further details when it is appropriate to do so.
Authorities are urging anyone who sees Guzman not to engage with him and to call 911 immediately. Non-emergency information can be directed to Elyria dispatch at 440-323-3302. Police stressed that even seemingly minor details - such as vehicle descriptions, direction of travel or relevant social media posts - could help detectives track down the suspect.
