A contracted special-education assistant in Glendale has been charged with multiple felonies after detectives say a young student reported sexual abuse on school grounds late last year. Investigators say the case quickly widened as they uncovered additional alleged victims and evidence.
According to the Glendale Police Department, officers first responded on December 19, 2025, after an 8-year-old special-needs student disclosed the alleged abuse. Police arrested 25-year-old Joseph Vladimir Sanchez the following day. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has filed eight felony counts against Sanchez, including multiple counts alleging lewd acts on a child and one count of possessing child sexual-assault material.
He appeared for arraignment on Tuesday, entered a not-guilty plea and was ordered held on 6 million dollars bail, CBS Los Angeles reported. Prosecutors told the court they presented additional evidence from the investigation, and a judge revoked Sanchez’s earlier release.
Detectives say they later identified two more underage victims and believe there may be others, with possible incidents going back as far as three years. The police release states that Sanchez was a contracted employee of the Covelo Group assigned to Columbus Elementary and Glenoaks Elementary, and that the Glendale Unified School District is cooperating with the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the department’s Assaults Bureau at (818) 548-4840.
What the charges mean
The counts filed in this case fall under sections of California law covering lewd acts on minors and possession of child sexual-assault material. These are offenses that carry lengthy prison sentences and mandatory sex-offender registration if a defendant is convicted. For more detail on those statutes and typical penalties, see FindLaw.
Contract staffing and school oversight
Police have emphasized that Sanchez was not directly employed by the district, but instead worked in classrooms through a contracted vendor, the Covelo Group, a setup that often raises tough questions about how outside aides are screened and supervised. The Glendale Police Department notes that district officials are assisting investigators, reviewing records and reaching out to families as the case moves forward.
The investigation remains active, and Sanchez is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court. Detectives continue to urge anyone with information to contact the Glendale Police Department’s Assaults Bureau at (818) 548-4840.
