Gunfire shattered a north Columbus neighborhood Saturday night, leaving one person in critical condition at Nationwide Children's Hospital as detectives worked late to piece together what happened.
Gunfire On Brimfield Road
Columbus Division of Police officers were called to the 1900 block of Brimfield Road on Feb. 14 after reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a wounded victim and rushed the person to a waiting medic unit.
A dispatcher told WBNS that the victim was taken to Nationwide Children's in critical condition. Officers locked down the area, and detectives moved in to begin the familiar, painstaking work of marking shell casings and knocking on doors.
Police say the circumstances that led up to the shooting are still murky. As of Saturday night, there were no arrests and no suspect description had been made public.
Race To The Hospital
The victim was transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital, the region's main pediatric hub at 700 Children's Drive in Columbus. Public information from the hospital notes that it handles some of the most serious pediatric trauma cases in central Ohio and regularly accepts transfers from surrounding communities.
Hospital officials did not immediately release the patient's age or provide additional details on the person's condition.
Detectives Seek Answers
According to WBNS, investigators say they are still trying to determine what led to the shooting, and no suspect information has been shared publicly. Detectives are asking anyone who saw or heard anything on Brimfield Road around the time of the incident to contact police.
Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477), according to the group’s website.
This is a developing story, and details may change as Columbus Division of Police and hospital officials release more information.
