A 59-year-old Halethorpe resident, identified as Dennis Randle, died on February 6 following injuries sustained in a house fire that occurred on Monday. This incident took place in the 1200 block of Vogt Avenue, according to officials from the Baltimore County Fire Department. Despite rescue efforts, Randle succumbed to his injuries days after being found unconscious by firefighters who responded to the heavy fire engulfing the second floor of his home, CBS News Baltimore reported.
The same incident also resulted in injuries to a woman who, with the assistance of neighbors, escaped through a window, and a firefighter who sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. Ongoing investigations by the Baltimore County Police Department and fire investigators concluded that the accidental fire was the result of improper use of a lighter. Randle's passing marks the fourth fatal fire fatality in the county in 2026, raising alarms about a recent spike in lethal residential fires, as per information obtained by Fox Baltimore.
Earlier in the year, Baltimore County recorded its first fire-related death after a 76-year-old individual perished in a Parkville house fire on January 4. The tragedy continued with the death of a 6-month-old in a separate fire in Essex, and an apartment fire in Dundalk that displaced over a dozen people, all occurring within a span of mid-January.
In light of these incidents, fire officials are urging the community to make fire safety and awareness a priority. Those seeking fire safety tips, free home inspections, or information on eligibility for a free smoke alarm are encouraged to visit the Community Risk Reduction page or call 410-887-1822, as mentioned by a Fox Baltimore report.
