Denver’s Hampden corridor is about to get another caffeine fix, with Black Rock Coffee Bar lining up to take over the former Panera Bread at 6385 E Hampden Ave. A construction permit has been filed for the space, putting a new drive-thru and lobby coffee spot on the busy stretch near I-25. An opening date has not yet been made public.
Permit Points To Black Rock Taking Over Old Panera
According to What Now Denver, city construction-permit records list Black Rock Coffee Bar as the incoming tenant at the Hampden address that previously housed a Panera Bread. The outlet reports that the notice appeared in recent filings and notes that the coffee chain has been active across the Denver area this year.
From Oregon Drive Thru To Colorado Expansion
Black Rock started in 2008 as a drive-thru operation in Beaverton, Oregon, then scaled quickly from there. The company reported operating 158 stores as of June 30, 2025, in a registration filed with the SEC. In January, the company announced a new Parker store as part of its Colorado push in a press release distributed via GlobeNewswire. The brand leans on its Fuel energy drinks and a steady rotation of seasonal menu items to keep traffic flowing.
Prime Corner For Commuter Coffee
Online directory and mapping listings still associate 6385 E Hampden Ave with a closed Panera Bread location, which lines up with reports that Black Rock intends to move into that former tenant’s space, per MapQuest. If it opens as planned, the shop would add one more national quick-serve coffee option for morning drivers already threading along Hampden in and out of the I-25 interchange.
Black Rock’s Playbook: Drive Thru First, Hangout Second
The company has emphasized a drive-thru-first strategy while also building out indoor spaces that invite people to stick around. Its registration filing notes that roughly three-quarters of locations included indoor seating as of mid-2025. Black Rock cites its loyalty program, digital ordering and its Fuel energy drink line as key drivers of repeat visits, a mix the company says helps fuel rapid growth in suburban markets.
What Now Denver reports that the Hampden permit does not yet list an opening date. We will be watching permit activity and company announcements for word on when the coffee chain officially flips the sign to “open.”
