A longtime corner convenience store in Milwaukee's Harambee neighborhood is headed for a dry spell, after the city pulled its liquor license and slapped its food-dealer license with a 90-day timeout. The move targets a small shop that neighbors say is a daily stop for many regulars, even as others complain about what happens on the sidewalk out front. Members of the Common Council’s Licenses Committee said they relied on police reports and testimony from nearby residents when they took action last Wednesday, as reported by the City of Milwaukee.
Licenses committee pulls plug on alcohol sales
At its meeting last Wednesday, the Licenses Committee voted 4-1 to deny renewal of the store’s Class A fermented malt liquor license and to suspend its Food Dealer license for 90 days. Committee members cited police reports and testimony that the business operation “results in a threat to the health, safety or welfare of the public,” according to the City of Milwaukee records.
Police reports and neighbors described repeated problems
Local reporting says the committee’s packet included police reports alleging incidents such as selling tobacco to a minor, an unlicensed gambling machine inside the shop, and ongoing concerns about fighting and loitering right outside the door. The reporting also notes that the store’s renewal application broke down sales as roughly 20% alcohol, 70% food and the remainder other items. Neighbors quoted in that coverage were split: Douglas Moore said he had “no problems coming to this store every day,” while Greg Arnold recalled he “witnessed one time a gun pulled on someone right outside the business.” The outlet also reports the owner did not respond to requests for comment, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
What comes next
The committee’s recommendations are now logged in the city’s legislative file and will continue through the formal process. The meeting record and case file show the motion as approved and include the related police reports and mitigation materials. The minutes also note that the store’s agent told the committee he planned to remove the gambling machines, but members still voted to nonrenew the fermented malt license and impose the 90-day food-dealer suspension, according to City of Milwaukee records.
