A man walking along the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan on Wednesday night was struck and killed after being hit by two vehicles, according to police. The collision, which unfolded near West 151st Street in Washington Heights, backed up traffic for hours while investigators and cleanup crews worked the scene. Emergency responders brought the man to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
How the crash unfolded
As reported by Gothamist, NYPD officials said the man was attempting to cross the busy highway from east to west at about 6:45 p.m. when he was first hit by a 2025 Toyota Sienna traveling south in the left lane. The force of that impact threw him into the northbound lanes, where he was struck again, this time by a 2022 Dodge Durango heading north in the left lane. Both motorists, a 35-year-old driving the Toyota and a 41-year-old behind the wheel of the Dodge, stayed at the scene, and police said no arrests had been made as of Wednesday night.
Citywide safety context
The fatal crash comes against a backdrop of broader efforts to curb traffic deaths across New York City. The New York City Department of Transportation has reported that 2025 ended with the lowest number of traffic fatalities ever recorded in the five boroughs, with pedestrian deaths also declining compared to the prior year. NYC DOT has credited Vision Zero street redesign projects and stepped-up enforcement for much of that progress.
A dangerous stretch
Despite those gains, the Henry Hudson Parkway has been the site of deadly crashes before. In August 2024, a wrong-way collision on the same roadway left two people dead and drew renewed scrutiny to how high speeds and limited crossing options can make the corridor especially hazardous. amNewYork covered that earlier wreck and the investigations that followed.
Investigation ongoing
Police said they are working to identify the victim and to determine why he did not use the pedestrian bridge at West 151st Street. The crash caused significant delays on the parkway, according to Gothamist.
