Springs Road in Hickory briefly turned into a SWAT staging lane yesterday when a traffic stop escalated into an armed standoff, ending only after deputies boxed in an SUV with armored vehicles. The driver, who had brandished a gun, eventually surrendered after officers used less-lethal tactics. No one was hurt, and the suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for a mental-health evaluation. Authorities say criminal charges are pending.
How Officials Say the Standoff Started
According to a post from the Catawba County Sheriff's Office, deputies first stopped the vehicle for reckless driving in a parking lot near St. Stephens Fire Station 1 on Springs Road. The office identified the driver as Jose Guadalupe Orozco Lemus and said he pulled out a firearm during the stop and told an officer he wanted to be shot.
Armored Vehicles, Perimeter and Gas
WSOC-TV reported that members of the county Special Tactics and Response (STAR) team were called in as the situation escalated. Using armored vehicles, they boxed in the SUV while deputies, North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers and Hickory police officers set up a perimeter around the scene.
Major Aaron Turk told the station that “the driver was armed with a pistol.” Officers eventually fired gas containers into the cab of the SUV to push the driver to come out, and he surrendered shortly afterward.
Negotiations and Language Access
860 WACB and the sheriff's release report that negotiators, including an investigator fluent in Spanish, tried to communicate with Lemus and convince him to exit the vehicle. Those efforts did not work, so STAR team members used two armored vehicles to pin the SUV in place and then deployed less-lethal munitions to encourage him out. Deputies took him into custody within minutes, and there were no further incidents.
Aftermath and Next Steps
Officials told WSOC-TV that the driver was transported to an area hospital for a mental-health evaluation. They also said criminal charges are pending. While deputies cleared the scene, the sheriff's office asked residents to steer clear of the area and shared a public information contact for anyone needing updates.
What Drivers and Neighbors Should Know
Authorities thanked the public for their patience as Springs Road was blocked off and later reopened once the area was secure, according to 860 WACB and the sheriff's release. Anyone who may have information or video related to the incident is asked to contact the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.
