Hillsborough County is stepping up to provide a lifeline to Dover residents grappling with a severe drought that has left their wells running dry. The County's Water Resources department is set to distribute clean drinking and cooking water to those affected, addressing an urgent need for one of life's most basic necessities. The relief effort will take place at the Dover Sports Complex, situated at 2801 Dover Park Dr., Dover, FL 33527, tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as per an official statement on the county website.
With the county declared to be in a modified stage 2 severe drought by the Southwest Florida Water Management District, consistent moderate rainfall during summer and sparse rain in fall and winter have precipitated this environmental stress.
For those needing to avail themselves of this resource, Hillsborough County advises to bring their own containers with lids to fill. The County's 300-gallon Hydration Station, alongside boxes of drinking water, will be available to the public at the aforementioned location, and the supplies are intended to help until conditions improve or until they run out.
During recent bouts of freezing or near-freezing weather, residents have found themselves having to pump more water to protect their investments in crops and fish farms. This action, while protective, has led to a temporary but significant drop in aquifer levels, which can in turn cause well pumps to prematurely fail if not properly managed. SWFWMD has provided guidance for frost and freeze protection, and residents can find more information to protect their well systems on their website.
