Downed power lines and a hit-and-run have shut down Glenwood Avenue at Paula Ann Court in Raleigh, temporarily trapping residents in a nearby neighborhood with no way in or out. Duke Energy crews are working on repairs while police block off the area, direct traffic, and warn drivers to steer clear. Authorities say the closure followed a vehicle hitting utility equipment and then leaving the scene.
In a post on X, the Raleigh Police Department said Glenwood Avenue at Paula Ann Court is blocked because of downed wires after a hit-and-run, and that Duke Energy crews are on scene. Police added that the affected neighborhood has only one way in and out and urged residents and passing motorists to avoid the area while the work is underway.
Hit-and-run crashes often knock out lines
This is not the first time a vehicle collision has cut power in Raleigh. In late December a hit-and-run on Capital Boulevard knocked out service for nearly 400 customers while crews repaired a damaged pole and transformer, per WRAL. Incidents like these underline how collisions that damage poles or transformers can leave neighborhoods without power until equipment is safely replaced.
What residents should do
If traffic signals or streetlights lose power, drivers should treat the intersection as an all-way stop, according to guidance from the N.C. Department of Transportation. People should stay away from any downed or sagging power lines and not attempt to move them. The utility asks customers to report outages through its outage map and says crews prioritize safety and critical infrastructure when restoring service, per Duke Energy.
Where to get updates
For official updates, residents are advised to monitor the Raleigh Police account on X and local news outlets. For non-emergency questions, they can call Raleigh Police at 919-829-1911, per the department’s page at Raleigh Police. Customers affected by the outage can check the utility outage map for meter counts and crew status while repairs continue.
Raleigh police have urged drivers to avoid the area while the utility work and investigation continue and said they will provide more information as it becomes available. We will update this post when agencies release new details.
