What started as a stomachache on the remote Kalalau Trail turned into a helicopter ride off one of Kaua‘i’s most famous beaches on Thursday, as rescue crews airlifted a 51-year-old German visitor and a minor to safety. The Kaua‘i Fire Department’s Air 1 helicopter picked up the pair at Kalalau Beach after the adult hiker reported stomach problems. Crews flew them to Princeville Airport, where American Medical Response evaluated the adult, who then declined further medical care. The scene was cleared later that afternoon, according to the County of Kaua'i's Facebook post.

Officials Say Single Rescue Chopper Was Already Tied Up

Kaua‘i Fire Department Chief Michael Gibson used the incident to remind residents and visitors that the island operates with just one rescue helicopter, and he urged people to request air evacuations only for true emergencies.

“When Air 1 is used for situations that do not involve a medical emergency or imminent danger, it can delay our response to life-threatening incidents elsewhere on the island,” Gibson said, according to a Facebook post from the County of Kaua‘i.

Rescue Timeline And Medical Check

According to Hawaii News Now, dispatchers were first notified of the sick hiker shortly after 7:45 a.m. on Thursday. Rescue 3, aboard Air 1, did not launch to Kalalau until about 1:35 p.m.

Crews located the adult and the minor at Kalalau Beach, loaded them into the helicopter, and flew them to Princeville Airport. There, American Medical Response personnel checked the adult hiker, who declined additional treatment. The response wrapped up shortly after 4:05 p.m.

How The Kahili Search Affected Response Time

The department said the delay in getting Air 1 to Kalalau was caused by an ongoing multi-agency search at Kahili Beach for a missing 19-year-old fisherman, Matthew Packard-Asai. That search involved the Kaua‘i Fire Department, Kaua‘i Police Department, American Medical Response, and the U.S. Coast Guard, according to a press release from the County of Kaua‘i.

The county said that operation began after two fishermen were swept into the water on Jan. 28 and continued into the next day.

Kalalau’s Hazards And Recent Rescues

Kalalau’s rugged terrain and limited access points frequently turn mishaps into helicopter missions, and local reporting has documented several recent Kaua‘i Fire Department hoist operations along the trail. As noted in coverage of a swift cliffside rescue, crews often conduct short-haul extractions from cliffs and gulches, which can take longer when Air 1 is tied up elsewhere.

Officials again urged anyone heading onto the Nā Pali Coast to know their limits, carry reliable communication devices and plenty of water, and call for emergency services only when there is a genuine medical or life-threatening need.
