A routine red-light stop on a Las Vegas freeway ramp on Sunday escalated when a Nevada State Police trooper fired through a driver-side window after the motorist allegedly pointed a gun at officers near the southbound I-15 on-ramp at St. Rose Parkway. Neither the trooper nor the driver was seriously injured, and the driver was taken to a hospital before being booked into the county jail.
The stop occurred at 12:48 a.m. after the driver allegedly ran a red light, and troopers reported signs of impairment before the situation escalated. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal.
What Troopers Said Happened
The Nevada State Police release, quoted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, states that the driver refused to follow directions from troopers and then “pointed a firearm at the troopers.” One trooper responded by firing into the driver’s side window.
Officials said no serious wounds were reported. The driver was first transported to a hospital, then booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
Why This Stretch Of I-15 Sees So Much Heat
Nevada State Police regularly work the I-15 corridor south of St. Rose Parkway, where high speeds and heavy late-night traffic are common, a mix that officers say can turn “routine” stops into high-risk encounters, as reported by FOX5. That ongoing enforcement focus helps explain why troopers were posted along that stretch of freeway in the early-morning hours.
