Mount Vernon residents are grappling with the loss of a 24-year-old local man after a late-night dirt bike crash Saturday that proved fatal. Emergency crews were called shortly after 10:50 p.m. to the area near Walnut Alley and Sunset Street, where they found the rider critically injured. He was taken to Knox Community Hospital and later pronounced dead. Authorities identified him as 24-year-old Dylan Severns of Mount Vernon.
What State Troopers Say Happened
According to Knox Pages, citing the Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Severns was riding a Kawasaki KX100 dirt bike north on Walnut Alley at about 10:53 p.m. as he approached Sunset Street. Troopers said the bike went off the north side of the road and hit a utility pole guy wire.
Mount Vernon Police, Mount Vernon City Fire/EMS and On the Spot Towing responded to the crash. The patrol reported that Severns was not wearing a helmet at the time. The incident remains under investigation.
Helmet Law and Safety Context
Ohio law requires riders under 18, as well as novice-license holders, to wear U.S. Department of Transportation-approved helmets, but does not impose a universal helmet rule on experienced riders 18 and older, according to the Ohio Revised Code §4511.53. The statute also covers eye protection requirements and directs the state director of public safety to spell out detailed helmet standards.
Safety advocates regularly note that skipping protective gear, including helmets, significantly raises the risk of severe head injuries, regardless of a rider’s age or experience level.
Investigation and What Comes Next
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has so far released limited information and says the crash is still under investigation, Knox Pages reports. Officials have not yet commented on potential contributing factors such as speed, possible impairment or mechanical issues. Authorities may release additional details as they work through their probe of the fatal wreck.
