Weekend PATH riders shuttling between Jersey City and Manhattan are in for some late-night headaches. On select weekends in March and April, the Port Authority is pulling portions of the system out of service overnight, swapping trains for shuttle buses and alternate routes. The suspensions will hit segments linking Jersey City to points farther west, reshaping the routine for overnight workers and early-morning travelers. Expect longer trips, crowded buses, and busy transfer scenes at Journal Square and Newark Penn.
According to PIX11, the Port Authority says free shuttle buses will replace PATH service during the outages. Buses are slated to run roughly every 7 to 12 minutes during most hours, and every 15 to 20 minutes between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Riders are urged to build in extra time for waits and transfers when routing trips through the affected hubs.
Which lines will be impacted?
As outlined by the Port Authority, PATH trains will not operate between Journal Square and Grove Street during the late-night to early-morning windows on the affected weekends. The agency also reports that trains will be suspended between Harrison and Journal Square during certain overnight periods so crews can complete track and signal work. Officials are keeping the closures overnight in an effort to limit daytime disruptions for regular commuters.
When are the outages?
The Port Authority has scheduled four multi-day work windows, March 13–16, March 20–23, March 27–30 and April 24–27, according to PIX11. Exact service changes will vary by line and by time of day, and some daytime weekend service is expected to continue outside the late-night suspension windows. Riders should check PATH alerts for precise start and end times before heading out.
Alternatives and tips for riders
Officials note that NJ Transit will cross-honor tickets on trains between Newark Penn Station and New York Penn Station for riders affected by the outages, per the Port Authority. Travelers might also want to look at early-morning ferries, additional bus options, or shifting trips outside the late-night windows to dodge the worst of the crowds. Either way, check PATH alerts and NJ Transit advisories before you travel, and leave yourself extra time for transfers at Newark and Journal Square.
