A Madison Heights family has come into the spotlight following a recent incident involving a missing autistic child that has left them grappling with significant home damage. On February 1, a 6-year-old nonverbal boy wandered away from his family and was later found in the Brinkley family's home by owner La'Bron Brinkley, as FOX 2 Detroit reported. The Brinkleys had not been home at the time, and upon their return, they discovered the young boy in their bathtub with the water left running for hours, causing extensive water damage to their property.
The boy, Johnathan, had apparently made the upstairs bathroom his makeshift playground, unaware of the havoc his innocent play would cause. According to WWJ Newsradio 950, the Brinkley family arrived to find the boy unscathed, but their home significantly damaged. The water not only ravaged the upstairs bathroom but also led to a ceiling collapse in the basement, among other issues. The family, including their two children, has been displaced and is currently residing in a hotel while their home undergoes necessary repairs.
In an outpouring of community support, almost $5,000 has been raised for the Brinkleys through a GoFundMe campaign to assist them with unexpected costs and accommodations during the repair work on their home. "We're so happy that he is safe," La'Bron Brinkley told FOX 2 Detroit. The insurance is expected to cover the damages, but the family is facing immediate challenges like finding temporary housing and managing additional expenses until their home is livable once more.
Local residents have not hesitated to lend a hand, and the story of the Brinkley family's predicament has spurred a strong display of solidarity. "The least we could do is try to help them when they need help, when they were able to inadvertently help in such a big way," Krista Skodak from Royal Oak said, as detailed by WXYZ. The full scope of the damage is yet to be assessed as the water needs to dry completely, but the Brinkleys continue to find gratitude in the community's response to their plight. "This entire process has been tough, but God has held our hands," La'Bron Brinkley told WXYZ.
The family's ordeal underscores a heartwarming narrative: amidst personal loss and disruption, community kindness shines as neighbors come together to assist those in sudden hardship. The details surrounding Johnathan's disappearance preceding the incident have yet to be disclosed as the situation continues to be under investigation by the Madison Heights Police Department.
