A Maple Heights man, Darien Hobley, entered a guilty plea to charges including involuntary manslaughter related to a deadly encounter at an AutoZone store in Bedford. As reported by WKYC, the 22-year-old also pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence in the case involving the shooting death of his girlfriend.

Hobley's guilty plea was entered on Feb. 2, after originally facing more severe charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of felonious assault. The victim, 20-year-old Riley Jones of Shaker Heights, was fatally wounded on Aug. 4, 2025. According to Cleveland19 News, she had been shot in the chest during an argument with Hobley in the parking lot of the automotive parts store. After the incident, Hobley walked into the store to have someone call 911, then fled the scene on foot.

Shortly after the shooting, Bedford police arrived to find Jones unresponsive, and she was subsequently pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Police apprehended Hobley close to the crime scene. "Police took Hobley into custody near Magnolia Avenue, about a block from the crime scene," WKYC detailed. The following investigation led to his indictment by a Cuyahoga County grand jury on Aug. 11, 2025.

The court proceedings for Hobley are moving to the sentencing phase, which is set for Feb. 24 at 9 a.m. As part of the plea agreement, Hobley will be required to forfeit his "ghost gun," which is a firearm without a serial number that is typically assembled from a kit, to the Bedford police. While the full extent of his sentence remains undecided, with this guilty plea, the court acknowledges the gravity of Hobley's actions and the irreversible loss inflicted upon Jones's family and friends, and the community she was a part of.
