Michigan Central is rolling out The Michigan Central Mezz in April, a members-only, 17,000-square-foot coworking and collaboration floor tucked into the restored Station’s mezzanine. The new hub is geared toward startups, university programs and corporate teams that want close-at-hand access to prototyping labs, manufacturing resources and the broader district programming. It is the latest piece of the 30-acre Michigan Central innovation district and adds one more on-ramp into downtown Detroit’s growing tech and mobility scene.

According to Michigan Central, The Mezz will span 17,000 square feet on the mezzanine level of The Station and is set to open in April 2026. Michigan Central says access will be membership-based, with members receiving 24/7 entry, a slate of exclusive events and curated introductions to venture and university partners.

The Detroit Free Press reported that The Mezz will be outfitted with flexible desks, private conference rooms, quiet zones and a kitchen, slotting in alongside existing campus tenants that include Newlab and Ford’s Lincoln team. Detroit Free Press also tied the project to the wider Michigan Central redevelopment, which ranges from office teams to a planned NoMad hotel that has helped reshape Corktown around the Station.

What The Mezz Will Include

As outlined by Michigan Central, The Mezz will include 10 private conference rooms, private wellness rooms, a kitchen and a new rentable 30-person meeting suite scheduled to open in May. The release states that the floor is set up to host hundreds of professionals across a mix of dedicated desks, private offices and flexible workstations, essentially turning the mezzanine into a sizable shared headquarters.

How It Fits Into The Campus

Newlab at Michigan Central serves as the district’s anchor for prototyping, fabrication and early-stage startups, providing the kind of hands-on infrastructure many Mezz members are expected to tap. Axios reported that the broader redevelopment also includes a planned NoMad hotel and new corporate offices, and the Detroit Free Press has reported that the campus is operating under a development agreement that calls for roughly 2,500 full-time workers by the end of 2028.

Community Programming And Equity

On the community side, programs aimed at supporting Black founders have already been active on the campus. Grassroots efforts such as Black Tech Saturdays host regular gatherings at Newlab and recently received foundation support to expand, according to the Detroit Regional Chamber. CBS News Detroit noted that the Mezz announcement landed just as Black History Month wrapped up and highlighted a related initiative focused on helping Black entrepreneurs that is deepening its partnership with Michigan Central.

Michigan Central says there will be multiple membership lanes for teams and programs, ranging from flexible drop-in access to dedicated desks and private offices. The Mezz is intended to make it easier for local founders and visiting teams to plug into campus labs and pilot infrastructure, and applications and membership information are available through Michigan Central’s join page and the district’s membership channels.
