A late-night rush to Market Square ended with police and medics surrounding an unresponsive man on Forbes Avenue early Sunday, after he was found stabbed multiple times in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh’s dining and nightlife district. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where officials later said his condition had been upgraded from critical to stable.
According to WPXI, Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said officers were called to Forbes Avenue around 12:30 a.m. for reports of a man lying unresponsive in the street. Detectives arriving at the scene determined he had been stabbed in the head and lower back before medics rushed him to an area hospital, where he was later listed as stable. Police told WPXI they are searching for two suspects who took off from the area in a dark-colored SUV, and the investigation remains open.
Market Square's recent safety concerns
Market Square, a busy Downtown corridor packed with bars, restaurants, and late-night foot traffic, has seen its share of violent incidents in recent months, keeping the city’s Violent Crime Unit busy. In late December, WTAE reported that a man was shot in the leg in Market Square, prompting a Violent Crime Unit investigation. Previous Downtown stabbings and related arrests, tracked in local coverage including reporting on earlier Downtown stabbings, have underscored how difficult it can be to police crowded nightlife hubs once the sun goes down, as reported by Hoodline.
Police ask for tips
Pittsburgh Public Safety is asking anyone who saw the attack or has video from the area to contact investigators. The city’s public safety blotter lists contact details and tip procedures for the Violent Crime Unit, which can be reached at 412-323-7800 for leads tied to serious Downtown incidents, according to the city’s public safety page. Detectives say they will continue reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as they work to piece together what happened before the stabbing.
The investigation remains active, and police again urged anyone with information to step forward. This story will be updated as authorities release new details.
