An 18-year-old man from Moriches, Luis Gonzalo Barrionuevo Fuertes, has pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and related charges in connection with a crash in East Hampton that resulted in the death of a teenage. On Father’s Day 2025, after consuming alcohol with a group of teenagers at a local beach, Barrionuevo Fuertes lost control of his vehicle and collided with a tree, killing 19-year-old Scarleth Samaniego-Urgiles and seriously injuring another passenger.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, Barrionuevo Fuertes was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry at 74 mph in a 30 mph zone when the vehicle crossed into the wrong lane, narrowly missing an oncoming car, and eventually went off the road and rolled over after striking a tree. The crash resulted in the death of 19-year-old Scarleth Samaniego-Urgiles, while another passenger suffered a spinal fracture and severe hand lacerations. Raymond A. Tierney stated that the guilty plea reflects the serious consequences of driving under the influence, particularly when responsible for other passengers.

A chemical blood test showed that Barrionuevo Fuertes had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% at the time of the crash, and data from the vehicle’s event recorder confirmed the hazardous driving conditions. After entering a guilty plea before Steven A. Pilewski, Barrionuevo Fuertes faces a potential prison sentence of four to 12 years, with sentencing scheduled for March 18.

Barrionuevo Fuertes faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including manslaughter and assault. Melissa Aguanno is representing him in the case, which was prosecuted by Alexander Bopp. The investigation was led by Michael Coleman, and the case will conclude with sentencing.
