It looks like North Carolinians are getting more of the convenience they've been enjoying when it comes to the DMV, as the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) announces the addition of 10 new self-service kiosks across the state. This move comes as a follow-up to a successful two-year pilot program that saw close to 90,000 transactions happening away from the traditional lines and waiting rooms of DMV offices.
The new installations include spots in Raleigh, Charlotte, Fayetteville, and beyond, and will extend the NCDMV's reach into select Harris Teeter, Carlie C's, and Publix stores – not to mention one at the Charlotte South Driver License Office. With nine kiosks already live and another on the way tomorrow in Charlotte, it's clear that the demand for quick DMV services, without the office visit is there.
The kiosks aren't just there to blend into the background near your weekly grocery haul; they offer up a variety of DMV services. According to an article on the NCDMV website, customers can renew driver licenses and state IDs, duplicate the same, renew vehicle registrations, and even pay property tax on new vehicles. These transactions reportedly take just a few minutes, provided you've come equipped with the necessary info like your license number or renewal notice.
"We are excited for this partnership to provide increased access to our services and to serve more of our customers away from the office," NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine was quoted on the NCDMV website. What's probably less exciting for users are the fees: there's a $4.95 convenience charge tacked onto each transaction through the third-party kiosk vendor, Neumo, and a 2 percent card processing fee, but if it means skipping the DMV line, many might find that a small price to pay.
For those who prefer to map out their errands down to the minute, the NCDMV's site offers an interactive map showing all kiosk locations.
