A New Beaver Borough man has been sentenced in the death of his girlfriend after entering a no-contest plea in Beaver County court, according to court records.
Ian Lanier Freed, 41, received an active jail term of one-and-a-half to five years, followed by five years of probation once he is released. The case stems from the death of his girlfriend, 51-year-old Elaine Joyce Daley, reported in November 2023.
An obituary from Marshall Funeral Home lists Daley’s date of death as Nov. 19, 2023, and identifies her as a New Galilee resident and the mother of two. The obituary focuses on funeral arrangements and the family members she leaves behind.
Sentence And Plea
As reported by the New Castle News, Freed entered a no-contest plea to a charge of voluntary manslaughter, which allowed him to avoid a jury trial. The judge then imposed a sentence of 1½ to 5 years in the county jail, followed by five years of probation.
According to the same report, Freed had been living at Freed's Mobile Home Park in New Beaver Borough at the time of the case.
What A No-Contest Plea Means
A no-contest plea, or nolo contendere, lets a defendant accept punishment without formally admitting guilt. For sentencing, it is treated the same as a guilty plea, although it often cannot be used as an admission in a later civil lawsuit, according to the Legal Information Institute. Judges must approve such pleas, and defendants who enter them typically give up their right to a trial.
The New Castle News report noted there were no immediate comments from prosecutors or from Daley’s family included in the account. With the plea accepted and the sentence handed down, the criminal case in Beaver County is, at least for now, concluded in the courts.
