Chesterland is getting a fresh spot to grab a pint and a slice this week as Purpose Brew Works Taproom swings open its doors, bringing a 4,500-square-foot brewery and taproom to the east side. Owners Terry Nagy and Scott Hemrock are starting with a soft opening, brewing on-site and rolling out a small but focused kitchen menu built around pizzas, a burger, and a handful of appetizers while the back-of-house finds its rhythm.
The soft launch comes with limited hours - Wednesday through Friday evenings plus weekend service - and the bar is slated to pour 14 beers and a seltzer to start, according to Cleveland.com. The outlet notes that the roughly 4,500-square-foot space is opening with a trimmed-down food lineup while crews finish the final touches of the buildout.
News 5 Cleveland reports the partners planned their soft opening for Wednesday at 3 p.m. Hemrock told the station he envisions the taproom as a relaxed local hangout, "a place to have a drink, listen to music, and grab a meal." To widen the net beyond beer diehards, News 5 Cleveland also notes the bar program will include cocktails and wine alongside the house brews.
Permit Delays And The Backstory
The road to opening night was not exactly a sprint. The partners signed their lease in January 2025 and then spent months working through building-department issues, including a snag over an unlicensed well that slowed renovation work, according to Cleveland.com. The red tape pushed the timeline past what they had originally hoped for, but the delays did not knock the project off course.
What You Will Find On Tap And On The Menu
Hemrock is brewing on a five-barrel system, leaning into German-style lagers and traditional European styles while keeping roughly a dozen beers in rotation, a direction highlighted on the brewery's website, Purpose Brew Works. Early food service is staying deliberately straightforward: a couple of pizzas, a burger, and a few starters as the full kitchen comes online.
The hardware behind the bar is built for flexibility. Geauga County Maple Leaf previously reported that the on-site setup was designed to support 12 to 14 taps, giving the team room to rotate through different styles as the lineup evolves.
How It Fits Into The Region's Beer Scene
The opening comes at a moment when Northeast Ohio's craft beer scene is recalibrating. Several smaller breweries in the region have recently closed, and industry watchers say newer spots need more than just good beer to stick around long term, as reported by News 5 Cleveland. Nagy and Hemrock are banking on the combined brewery, taproom, and restaurant model to give Purpose Brew Works a sturdier foundation than a beer-only operation.
Early signals suggest the community is ready to give it a shot. Local organizations already have the taproom on their spring calendars, with Leadership Geauga listing upcoming events at the space. Between neighborhood support, a full drinks lineup, and food from the kitchen, the partners are hoping the soft opening is just the start of a long run in Chesterland.
